A Blowing Rock tradition for about 40 years, the Artists Alley 2010 Studio Tour and Sale will take place from Friday to Sunday, September 3 to 5. Twenty artists will have work displayed in four homes as part of this year’s show, which includes oils, mixed media, pastels, charcoal and more, and all the art on display is for sale.

A reception will take place on Friday, September 3, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m., featuring wine, various other beverages and hors d’oeuvres; and the show continues on Saturday, September 4, from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and on Sunday, September 5, from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. To reach Artists Alley, drive 3.5 miles south on Highway 221 from Blowing Rock. Happy Valley Fiddlers’ Convention Friday to Sunday

Location: Jones Farm, Highway 268, Happy Valley
Cost: Free Friday and Sunday/$5 advance, $10 gate Saturday/free children 12 and under

The Historic Happy Valley Old-Time Fiddlers’ Convention is Friday to Sunday, September 3 to 5, at the Jones Farm, located on Highway 268 northeast of Lenoir. The convention will kick off Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. with an old-fashioned community dance that will include square dancing, contra dancing and flatfoot dancing.

A music competition will be held Saturday, with a preliminary competition for individuals beginning at 10:30 a.m. The final day of the convention will feature a Sunday concert on the Yadkin, and old-time sacred music will be on the stage from 10:00 a.m. until noon. Run the Gauntlet Obstacle Course Saturday

Date: Saturday, September 4
Time: 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. start times
Location: Cooper’s Dairy Farm, Brownwood Community
Cost: $45 per person

Blue Ridge Endurance hosts an off-road race called Run the Gauntlet in the High Country this Saturday, September 4. The athletic challenge features an intense 4.3-mile, primarily off-road course with man-made obstacles, numerous creek crossings, primitive logging roads, fields, extreme terrain challenges and a finish line mud pit. 

The challenge will be held in the fields adjacent to Riverside Restaurant, which is approximately 15 minutes from Boone and located in the Brownwood community between Todd and Fleetwood. Starting times for those participating in the event will vary depending on individual, two-person and three-person teams. The cost is $45 per person. For more info, call 336-877-8888.

High Country Beer Fest Saturday

Location: Broyhill Inn and Conference Center, Boone
Cost: $25 advance/$30 gate

The third annual High Country Beer Fest is from 3:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 4, at the Broyhill Inn and Conference Center. Tickets for the event are $25 in advance and can be purchased online at www.hcbeerfest.com, at Peabody’s Beer and Wine in Boone or in Banner Elk at Erick’s Cheese and Wine. Tickets at the gate will be $30, but the event is expected to sell out.

Art & Craft Show Saturday and Sunday

Cost: Free admission

Mountain Top Promotions and its owner Pat Fay will host one last Fine Art & Craft Show before summer is over in the High Country. The show will be at the Banner Elk Elementary School field Saturday and Sunday, September 4 and 5. The show features free admission and parking and will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Saturday and 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Sunday.

The show will have furniture, handbags, rocking chairs, pottery, jewelry, photography, handmade rugs, glasswork and more. Local authors will also be present. Mile High Kite Festival Sunday

Date: Sunday, September 5
Time: 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Location: Beech Mountain meadows
Cost: Free

The eighth annual Mile High Kite Festival takes place Sunday, September 5, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the meadows at the top of Beech Mountain next to the Brick Oven Pizzeria. The field will be divided into two different areas: one for exhibitions and demonstrations from members of kite clubs and one for the general public.

Other activities in the meadows will include parachute kite races and face painting, and a variety of craft and food vendors will be available. The event is free to the public, and the first 200 children under 12 will receive kites. Attendees are welcome to bring their own kites; however, for those who might not have their own, a vendor will sell a variety of kites.
