Story by Sam Calhoun
On Saturday, July 19, Avery County is teaming with activities for all ages of High Country residents.
In addition to the Fine Art and Master Craft Festival at Banner Elk Elementary and BJ’s Dog Show at Buckeye Recreation Center on Beech Mountain, the Avery County Chamber of Commerce, Banner Elk Winery, Sugar Pointe and Mountain Retreats Realty, Rentals and Sales are hosting the inaugural High Country Wine Event on Saturday, July 19, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. on the lawn of Pleasing Mona’s Design Studio, located at 146 Shawneehaw Avenue in downtown Banner Elk.
Admission is $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Tickets are available at the Avery County Chamber of Commerce, Pleasing Mona’s Design Studio, Banner Elk Winery, Sugar Pointe and Mountain Retreats Realty, Rentals and Sales. Attendees can pay in cash or charge the tickets on their credit card.
Proceeds from the event go to promote tourism and small business in Avery County.
“This is a High Country event—it’s not just for people in Avery County,” said Sue Zalewski, Avery County Chamber of Commerce director of events and marketing. “We’ve never done this before and we hope it’s going to be a fun event. We hope the community will come out here, support our members, relax for the evening and have fun.”
At the event, attendees will get to sample four wines from Banner Elk Winery and then get a free glass of their favorite. Zuzda, Papa’s Pizza To Go, Fabio’s and Carolina BBQ will provide appetizers. Additional glasses of wine are $4 each.
“Banner Elk Winery is an award-winning winery and I hope the community will come out to give it a try,” said Zalewski.
The event features entertainment by New Strings, as well as a silent auction. Linville Gallery, the YMCA of Avery County, Grandfather Mountain, Sugar Mountain, various golf courses and multiple restaurants are donating prizes for the silent auction.
