Story by David Brewer
Whether you’re a novice or a pro on the river, the Foscoe Fishing Company will have you casting about at its inaugural Foscoe Fly Fishing Festival. Taking place this Saturday, July 26, at the store’s Highway 105 location, the event will begin at 10:00 a.m. and will feature free seminars, clinics, demonstrations and children’s activities.
Foscoe Fishing Company & Outfitters owners Scott and Dottie Farfone hope the festival will offer them a chance to give back to the community while turning more people on to fly fishing.
Throughout the day, guides and experts will be on hand leading clinics on fly rod casting, bamboo fly-rod making and fly tying. Children’s activities will be held throughout the day including beginner fly tying, fish coloring and a bug expo.
A full Orvis dealer, Foscoe Fishing Company and Outfitters will offer test casting of the Orvis Helios, the world’s lightest fly rod, throughout the event. Casters will receive a Helios hat and a $10 coupon.
Festival attendees will be able to feast for free on a lunch consisting of hamburger hot dogs and cold drinks from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
Foscoe Fishing Company and Outfitters’ Orvis-endorsed guides will lead four seminars throughout the day that will point avid fly fishers in the right direction for various types of great fishing including smallmouth fishing, wild trout fishing in the High Country, tailwaters in the South and other smallmouth fishing opportunities in the region.
Originally known as High Country Fly Fishing, Foscoe Fishing Company and Outfitters began in the mid-1980s, serving as the first high-profile shop to offer gear, guides and schools for fishermen. Avid fishermen and hunters, the Farfones took over the shop in 2005 and have continuously expanded the services and equipment choices.
Foscoe Fishing Company and Outfitters will soon move into its new log cabin location on the Watauga River. The new shop will be the store’s permanent location and have a classroom offering fly fishing schools and fly-tying classes. Customers will have access to the Watauga River out the back door and the Farfones are planning to offer an even wider variety of products.
Foscoe Fishing Company & Outfitters is located at 9218 Highway 105 South in Foscoe. For more info on this Saturday’s inaugural Fly Fishing Festival, call 828-963-6556 or click to www.foscoefishing.com.
