On Monday, August 11, The Avery County Friends of the Shelter will host a fundraiser on Emerald Mountain at Beech Mountain to benefit the building fund for the new Humane Society shelter in Newland. Tickets are $100 per person, and flat shoes are recommended.
The event, called Follow The Yellow Brick Road to Oz for Paws, is fashioned after the famous movie and will include the characters in costume, music by John Day, cocktails and wine donated by Savory Thymes in Boone, a martini bar, BBQ catered by Bandanas and a silent auction featuring pie baskets painted by Beech Mountain artists.
From 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., guests will experience Oz—from the twister to the balloon ride back to Kansas. The natural beauty of Beech Mountain, with its gnarly trees and huge rock outcroppings, creates the perfect setting and illusion for the story.
The Emerald Mountain community was named after the Land of Oz theme park that was in operation there during the 1970s. Residents may remember visiting the park and experiencing the magic of the Oz story with all its movie characters and timeless lessons: have a brain, have a heart, have courage and know that each of us already possesses them.
Orphaned animals in this county also share the message, “There’s no place like home.”
Beech Mountain residents Carol McCarvill and Ellen Murton are chairing the event.
