Upcoming Classes at the Paul and Florence Thomas Memorial Art School
The Paul and Florence Thomas Memorial Art School on Trading Post Road in Glendale Springs, the newest addition to the High Country’s rich and varied art scene, announces its inaugural season of workshop classes. Renovations to the old Lee’s Lodge/Gathering Place property just off the Blue Ridge Parkway and Highway 16 have been proceeding since winter, preparing classroom space and other amenities for the first year of classes.
Each of the following workshops includes lunch each day. To register or for more info, call the Ashe County Arts Council at 336-846-ARTS.
Double Vision: Plein Air
Addren Doss and Alexis Lavine will present Double Vision: Plein Air on Friday and Saturday, August 22 and 23. After choosing a single landscape scene, Doss will demonstrate how to render it in oils outdoors, and Lavine will do the same in watercolor. Students will become familiar with the set up, the gear and the techniques for either medium, depending on their preference. The two-day workshop costs $190, and half is due upon registration.
Drawing
From Monday through Wednesday, September 8 to 10, Stephen Shoemaker will conduct a workshop on drawing. This workshop will develop students’ abilities to capture on paper the values, contours, perspectives, light, shadows and emotion of what they see before them—in pencil, ink and charcoal. The three-day workshop costs $270, and half is due upon registration.
Toward the Mastery of Painting
From Monday, October 13, through Friday, October 17, Ron Taylor, former professor of painting at North Carolina State University, Appalachian State University and UNC Charlotte, will conduct a workshop called Toward the Mastery of Painting. Students will review and practice the larger issues of painting, as well as the smallest details. The daily classes will explore the many ways to go from a stimulus or idea to a fully realized painting—plein air or studio, with models or photographs. Taylor’s many students over the years will attest to his humorous, personally-engaged manner and ability to communicate and inspire. The five-day workshop costs $450, and half is due upon registration. On-campus housing is available for five nights at $250 for double occupancy and $375 for single occupancy.

Kate Worm Exhibits, Teaches during Carlton Gallery’s Mid-Summer Exhibition
Figure artist Kate Worm displays her intimate works on paper at Carlton Gallery’s 26th Mid-Summer Exhibition. The exhibition began July 27 and continues through September 15 at its new location on Highway 105 in the Grandfather Community.
Worm’s figurative work borders on the abstract at times, but always exhibits a spontaneous, fluid quality. She works in unconventional ways with watercolor and gouache. Worm captures light and mood, and then illustrates her subject matter in a way that can not be achieved with traditional realism. All of Worm’s paintings evolve from careful study of the model, as she spends less time painting and more time observing the figure.
Worm received her BA from Michigan State University and MFA from Columbia Teachers College in New York City. Worm works extensively in arts education and special education interests.
Worm’s two one-day Let’s Figure It In workshops at Carlton Gallery on Wednesday, August 6, and Thursday, August 7, will emphasize composition, color and good drawing as it relates to painting the female form. Participants will work with an unclothed model using nontraditional drawing and painting techniques to express energy and abstraction within a traditional context. The cost is $115, and the workshop meets from 10:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Visit and view art in all media by Carlton Gallery’s collection of local, regional and international artists in its new location on Highway 105, 10 miles south of Boone and 7 miles north of Linville.
