High Country Audubon Hummingbird Workshop August 9

Catawba County Parks and Recreation Interpretive Ranger Dwayne Martin will share his knowledge of hummingbirds at a High Country Audubon workshop on Saturday, August 9.What weighs about as much as a penny in your hand, yet functions like a normal-sized person who eats 275 pounds of hamburger every day?
The answer is a hummingbird.

These tiny jewels of the air migrate each spring to the United States from winter grounds in Mexico and Central America. Right now the ruby-throated hummingbird, one of the smallest of North American hummingbirds, is extremely active around the High Country.

At the High Country Audubon workshop on Saturday, August 9, you can learn more about hummers and witness hummingbird banding.

Dwayne Martin, one of only four people in North Carolina licensed to capture and band hummingbirds, has some wonderful insights into the life and behaviors of hummingbirds. He is the Catawba County Parks and Recreation interpretive ranger and has been banding hummingbirds for several years.

During the workshop, Martin will talk about the natural history of hummingbirds, their amazing migration and how you successfully can attract them to your yard.
