World Breastfeeding Week is August 1 to 7

Appalachian District Health Department celebrates World Breastfeeding Week from Friday, August 1, to Thursday, August 7, 2008. Breastfeeding has many benefits for babies, mothers and society. Breastfeeding is convenient; it is always ready and at the right temperature.

Breastfeeding is part of living green. It’s environmentally friendly in that no packaging is required and no pollution comes from breast milk. Mothers who choose to breastfeed their babies are helping to protect their baby’s health. In fact, the Eat Smart, Move More North Carolina Plan recommends breastfeeding as a key strategy in the fight against obesity through protection of developing a healthy weight for babies and assisting mom to achieve a healthy post-baby weight. Even moms who breastfeed their babies for some time give their babies health benefits.

Expectant moms, moms and their children are invited to attend a local La Leche League meeting. Moms can also receive support and helpful tips by contacting Appalachian District WIC Lactation Educator Daphne Tucker. “We love to help moms discover the wonderful bonding experience provided by breastfeeding. Often, a simple phone call can help mom find solutions for challenges she may be facing,” Tucker said.
