Avery YO! Host Parent Registration and Orientation August 14

On Thursday, August 14, from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. in Room 114 at Mayland Community College in Newland, Avery Youth Opportunities—Avery YO!—will host a parent orientation and registration for the 2008-09 academic school year. Parents can stop by at any time within the three-hour block.

Parents interested in registering their children for the after-school program should bring a current picture, a copy of shot records and the phone number of the child’s pediatrician.

Avery YO! will serve the following schools: Banner Elk Elementary, Newland Elementary, Crossnore Elementary, Riverside Elementary, Freedom Trail Elementary, Avery Middle and Cranberry Middle School.

The elementary school sites will operate Monday through Friday from the time that school dismisses until 6:00 p.m. The middle school sites will operate from Monday through Thursday from the time school dismisses until 6:00 p.m. Avery YO! will be operational on Monday, August 25, for elementary schools and Tuesday, September 2, for middle schools.

A registration fee for full-time private-pay students at the elementary sites will be charged; sliding scale and scholarship options will be available for parents that meet the criteria.

Students scoring either a level 1 or 2 on the math and reading end of grade tests may participate in the 21st Century Community Learning Center Program at no cost. Middle school students may attend the program at no cost through the Support Our Students portion of Avery YO!

The sliding scale option is available through the Department of Social Services. Guardians interested in pursuing that option should make note of their gross pay or bring a copy of a paycheck stub to the registration session. DSS Childcare Coordinator Amy Trivette will be available to answer questions regarding eligibility and to set up appointments.

Last year Avery YO! served more than 250 students, and the program anticipates filling up at many of the school sites. No student may attend the program until all paperwork is onsite and complete.

Avery YO! is a collaborative effort between WAMY Community Action, Avery County Cooperative Extension and 4-H, and Avery County Schools.

Avery YO! includes three programs: the 21st Century Community Learning Centers Program, the Support Our Students program and the 4-H program. Students in each of the programs are also eligible to participate in Survivor: The Ultimate Afterschool Adventure.

The 21st Century Community Learning Center Program is funded through the Department of Public Instruction. The Support Our Students program is funded through the NC Department of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, and the 4-H program is funded through the Department of Social Services.
