Attention Builders—Last Opportunity To Earn CGP Designation Coming This Fall

Early Registration for NAHB’s Certified Green Professional Courses Ends September 18

Face it—if you are builder and don’t have a plan to go green soon, you are way behind the pack. Green is definitely the buzzword these days, especially in regards to building, as homebuyers are now more than ever looking for homes that are energy efficient, sustainable and feature renewable technologies. So why are you still building yesterday’s stick-built home when you could be learning how to build tomorrow’s sustainable, energy-efficient masterpiece?

You’re in luck, but you’re running out of time. This fall, the High Country Homebuilders Association (HCHBA) will host two classes in Boone—Green Building for Building Professionals and Business Management for Building Professionals. Both classes are required to earn a Certified Green Professional (CGP) designation and, according to the HCHBA Green Building Committee, this may be the last time these classes are offered in Boone. HCHBA has already hosted two groupings of courses and certified many local builders with the CGP designation.

A CGP, an exclusive designation offered by the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), is designed to teach building industry professionals strategies for incorporating green building principles into homes using cost-effective and affordable options. When a builder becomes a CGP, they gain a greater understanding of sustainable building techniques, knowledge of methods to achieve higher energy efficiency, marketing and sales tools specifically tailored to green building and the business practices that foster success. After receiving the designation, builders will be able to demonstrate the enhanced environmental impact, increased performance and health benefits of green homes to potential buyers.

Early registration for the Green Building course ends on Friday, September 18, and all interested attendees must register for both classes no later than Thursday, October 1, if they want to secure a space. Both classes take place at Builders Plaza, located at 755 Highway 105 Bypass in Boone.

Green Building for Building Professionals Class

Registration begins at 8:00 a.m. on Wednesday, October 14. The class instructor is Chandler Design-Build’s Michael Chandler, who has built solar and green homes for more than 30 years. For more information on Chandler, click to www.chandlerdesignbuild.com.

For NAHB members, the course costs $275 per person if registration and full payment are received before Friday, September 18; if received between September 18 and October 1, the cost is $350 per person. For nonmembers, the course costs $350 per person if registration and full payment are received before Friday, September 18; if received between September 18 and October 1, the cost is $400 per person.

Business Management for Building Professionals Class
The Business Management for Building Professionals class is a one-day course and takes place on Friday, October 16, from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Registration begins at 8:00 a.m.

For NAHB members, the course costs $225 per person, and for nonmembers, the course costs $300 per person. No early registration discounts are available, and all participants must register prior to October 1.

Continuing Education/Extra Fees
A CGP designation requires continuing education. To maintain a CGP designation, builders are required to complete 12 hours of continuing education every three years. A minimum of six hours is required to come from the NAHB University of Housing educational activities, and a minimum of eight hours is required to come from green building industry related educational activities.

A CGP designation also requires additional fees. CGP builders must pay a graduation fee to NAHB of $145 for members and $245 for nonmembers. They must also pay an annual renewal fee to NAHB of $50 for members and $75 for nonmembers.
